This Precious Life: A Reading of New Prayer Poetry by Liturgist Alden Solovy

Thursday, January 14, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 11:45 am

Free

Join us for an intimate session with liturgist Alden Solovy, who will read from and answer questions about his new book This Precious Life: Encountering the Divine with Poetry and Prayer. A friend and frequent scholar at Beth Israel, Alden will share inside stories of his newest work.

In This Precious Life, Alden presents prayers, poetry, and meditations inspired by encounters with God. The first part draws from divine moments in our sacred texts, mostly the Torah but also the Prophets and the Writings. Using a contemporary voice, Solovy imagines these holy moments as experienced by our biblical ancestors so we can reclaim them as our own. The second part focuses on sacred moments in our daily lives, connections with the Divine that occur simply because we are human beings created in God’s image. Equally suited to individual reflection and group prayer, the book completes a trilogy with This Grateful Heart and This Joyous Soul.

An American Israeli liturgist, poet, author and educator, Alden is the Liturgist-in-Residence for the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. His writing was transformed by multiple tragedies, marked in 2009 by the sudden death of his wife from catastrophic brain injury. His teaching spans from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem to synagogues throughout North America, as well as Leo Baeck College in London and Limmud Conferences in the U.S., Canada and the UK. He is the author of four books. Alden’s work is anthologized in 15 volumes from Jewish, Christian and Catholic publishers. Alden also writes for Ritualwell, RavBlog and the Times of Israel. He’s a three-time winner of the Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism and the founder of ManKind Project Israel. Find his latest work at ToBendLight.com. In 2012, Alden made aliyah to Jerusalem.

There is no fee, but please RSVP for planning purposes. This event is held virtually on Zoom. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event.
