|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Monday, repeating until Monday, April 4, 2022

Free

Class meets Mondays, March 21, 28, and April 4, 2022, from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm on Zoom.

March 21st: MGM: Louis B. Mayer’s Ganzer Mishpocher – This former junk dealer ran the most successful studio of Hollywood’s golden age. A father figure to some, a ruthless dictator to others, he made and destroyed some of the biggest stars in the business. A fascinating look at the studio that bore his name, but eventually tossed him aside.

March 28th: Jack Warner: “I Don’t Want it Good. I Want It Tuesday!” – The youngest Warner eventually eclipsed his ambitious brothers, becoming the dominant figure in one of Hollywood’s largest and most innovative studios. How did his extraordinary instincts make Warner Brothers such a successful dream factory?

April 4th: Billy Wilder: “Nobody’s Perfect” – He fled Nazi oppression and became the most versatile and successful screenwriter-director in Hollywood. He infuriated some colleagues, and was deeply beloved by others. How did the genius behind the tragic Sunset Boulevard also create the classic mystery Witness for the Prosecution and the timeless comedy Some Like It Hot?

Entertainment historian John Kenrick has worked in the theatre at every level from amateur to Broadway, eventually serving as personal assistant to six Tony Award-winning producers, including the team behind the original production of Rent. He has taught musical theatre history courses at New York University’s Steinhardt School, The New School University, and Philadelphia’s University of the Arts. John’s books include Musical Theatre: A History. He is the creator of the educational website Musicals101.com, and the YouTube series Musicals101.com’s Aisle Say! One of his students put it this way: “He didn’t just make me laugh – he made me care.”

There is no fee, but please RSVP for planning purposes.
