Ode to Joy of Beth Israel ~ Yom Kippur 5781 by Renée Barnow

So many changes
So much stays the same
Special prayers, tears hearing Kol Nidre

Sow in tears, reap with. . .joy

Alone, comfortable on the couch, barefoot
More together than ever
One people

Sanctuary on the screen
Sanctuary of my home
Sanctuary in my soul

Surrounded by magnificent music
Enveloped by spirit
Gently wrapped like the Torah
On her joy ride to visit us

Vicissitudes of life
Always in motion
As we still our voices
Quiet the mind

Well supported on the narrow bridge

Invited to return again
Reflect on our imperfectly perfect
Perfectly imperfect humanness

For the best High Holy Days
I am blessed with and grateful for
The magic and majesty of Beth Israel

L’chaim,

Renée Barnow

Dear Renee my friend. Thank you for your lovely poem. It spoke to my heart & expressed perfectly our experience & feelings about the blessings of being part of the Beth Israel family. I miss seeing you & sharing our occasional women’s Shabbat dinners. Your friendship is a blessing.
