Our Honoree

Teacher, educator, director, founder, visionary – that’s our Helene Schlafman, known affectionately by generations of Beth Israel members as “Eemah” (mom). We are thrilled to celebrate Helene’s 50th year in Jewish education at Beth Israel! Helene may be best known for her groundbreaking Madrichim program at Beth Israel. She was Beth Israel’s first female Director of Education. The Beth Israel Day School and the Bill and Sid Rubin Preschool were both created under her supervision. Helene started Camp Beth Israel, an overnight summer camp. She also developed and produced the award winning children’s theatre company, Show BIS, (Beth Israel Students), which engaged hundreds of Beth Israel children and teens. By engaging our youth Jewishly, Helene has shaped countless Beth Israel children and their families. Her far reaching impact will continue to influence generations to come!

Helene Schlafman, Eemah, has been educating Beth Israel’s youth for 50 years! As Religious School Director, a teacher, program designer, and innovator, Helene has been a trailblazer in developing Beth Israel’s youth and education programming. We are excited to celebrate Helene and her countless contributions to Beth Israel on Saturday evening, May 12, 2018, at our Annual Fundraiser, Camp Eemah. This fun and festive evening will feature upscale camp cuisine, a silent auction, music and dancing, and, of course, a tribute to Helene.

Our Emcee

Sam the Cooking Guy is an everyday guy who has found a way to make cooking casually understandable. With no fancy equipment and by speaking English instead of ‘chef-speak,’ Sam considers himself to be a “sort of the everyman of cooking”. Sam has two shows: SAM THE COOKING GUY airs on YUR VIEW with COX, and his online show, STCGO. Both shows are shot right in his house. He cooks with his kids and dogs – just like we all do. Despite winning 15 Emmy Awards, Sam insists that he is just a regular guy, using regular words showing how to cook easy, great food…Food that’s “big in taste and small in effort.”
