ReWalk: Meet the Marine Who Walks Again Thanks to This Technology!

Thursday, November 20, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

The San Diego Chapter of the American Technion Society, Congregation Beth Israel and OurCrowd invite you to a light breakfast with Captain Derek Herrera U.S. Marine Corps – CEO, RuckPack

After being paralyzed while serving in Afghanistan, Marine Captain Derek Herrera was determined to walk again. He found the ReWalk Robotics exoskeleton — created by a Technion graduate — and convinced the company to include him in the clinical trials. This device has been presented at a past AIPAC conference and we’ve highlighted its story in our Israel Connection e-newsletter. Now is your chance to see it up close!

Captain Derek Herrera
Marine Captain Derek Herrera was commander of a Special Operations team in Afghanistan in 2012 when a sniper’s bullet entered his spine, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Determined to walk again, he found the ReWalk Robotics™ exoskeleton – created by a Technion graduate – and convinced the company to include him in the clinical trials. Driven to purchase his own device, he raised the necessary funds and uses the device regularly for his rehabilitation.

Capt. Herrera has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Purple Heart. He is an Assistant Operations Officer for 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, stationed at Camp Pendleton. Derek is pursuing his MBA at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He and his wife, Maura, reside in San Clemente.

ReWalk
In October, ReWalk’s IPO on the NASDAQ (RWLK) confirmed its status as one of the hottest companies on the exchange and one of the most successful IPO’s of a company whose root are in Israel and the Technion. Through OurCrowd, US investors were able to invest in ReWalk pre-IPO, the first of OurCrowd’s 50 portfolio companies with a successful exit.
