American Friends of Tel Aviv University in Partnership with Beth Israel invites you to this special event featuring Mark Shtaif, Rector at TAU, in conversation with Daniel Shainberg, TAU-Northwestern Joint MBA Alumnus.

The Rector will share how TAU has/is responding to the war and the role of higher education in Israel post-October 7.

About the Speaker

Professor Mark Shtaif is the Rector of Tel Aviv University.

Upon assuming this senior leadership role in 2020, Professor Shtaif has been active in preparing Tel Aviv University (TAU) for the challenges of the 21st century, a century characterized by the rapid advancement of information technologies and the subsequent societal transformations.

During his tenure as Rector, he has been navigating TAU through the tumultuous times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the contentious judicial reform debates,
and the harrowing Iron Swords conflict that ensued after the tragic events of October 7.

Professor Shtaif has worked as a principal member of Technical Staff in the Lightwave Systems Research Department of AT&T in New Jersey (formerly Bell Labs). He subsequently worked as a Principal Architect at Celion Networks, an optical networking start-up in New Jersey.

Professor Shtaif completed his BSc, MSc, and DSc degrees in Electrical Engineering at the Technion. In 2002 he joined the Faculty of Engineering at TAU and served as the head of its School of Electrical Engineering in 2017–2020. His fields of study include optical fibers, optical communications, communications theory, and quantum information.
