Pirkei Avot: Ethics of the Fathers; Judaism as an Ethical Religion

Sunday, March 13, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every month that begins at 9:00 am on day Second of the month, repeating until Sunday, April 10, 2016

Sunday mornings, March 13 and April 10 with Instructor Dr. Al Ray

Do you recognize some of these favorite, characteristic teachings from Pirkei Avot, our handbook to Jewish ethics?

__ “Who is rich? He who is happy with what he has.”

__ “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I?”

Regardless of one’s degree of religious observance, most of us have some familiarity with these edifying, spiritual, and practical teachings. This is because the founding rabbis of the Reform movement rejected the idea that all of Jewish law were God’s commandments and limited their sense of what God absolutely requires us to do to observance of the moral and ethical laws — Ethical Monotheism.

Grab your bagel and coffee at Café Beth Israel on the way to class and enjoy an informal atmosphere of lively discussion and participation as Al Ray explores with us the moral and ethical interpretations of the Oral Law as expressed in Pirkei Avot.

No fee, but please RSVP online below at least one week in advance. For more information, contact Program Director Bonnie Graff at bgraff@cbisd.org or call (858) 535-1111 ext. 2519.
