Erev Shabbat Chai Service: Jewish Views on Mental Illness, with Rabbi Richard Address
Friday, October 31, 2014 @ 6:15 pm - 7:30 pm
FreeJews are far from immune to mental illness. Eating disorders, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, among other mental health conditions, touch many of our lives and the lives of those we love. Does Jewish tradition have anything of value to say to us about mental illness?
Special guest speaker Rabbi Richard F. Address will share Jewish Views on Mental Illness, and how Judaism has spoken to mental health concerns for much of its history, very often in liberating and comforting ways.
Rabbi Address has served as the specialist and congregation consultant for the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) in the areas of Caring Community and Family Concerns. His work has been based on the belief that a congregation, to be a true “caring community,” must be founded on a theology of sacred relationships.
Welcome Shabbat with this inspiring service open to all and featuring Beth Israel’s Chai Band. The service is preceded by an oneg.
