Kabbalah: A Taste of Jewish Mysticism

Sunday, April 19, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

Free

Sunday mornings, April 19 and 26 and May 3, 2015 (3 sessions)
Instructor: Dr. Al Ray

You may be surprised to learn how many ways Jewish mysticism, and Kabbalah in particular, is integrated into contemporary Jewish thought, liturgy and practice. Did you know that when we stand up and turn around to welcome the Sabbath Bride at Friday night services that this is one of the liturgical innovations from the 16th century circle of Jewish mystics known as Kabbalists? The concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world) and tzimtzum (God is self-limiting) are hallmarks of Jewish theology and also trace their roots to Isaac Luria and his followers. And for many, Torah study and the performance of the mitzvot (commandments) are infused with mystical significance.

Grab your bagel and coffee at Café Beth Israel on the way to class and enjoy an informal atmosphere of lively discussion and participation as Dr. Al Ray takes us back in time to 16th century Safed in Israel and Isaac Luria’s school of Kabbalah.

The class is free, but please register online below at least two weeks in advance. For more information, contact Program Director Bonnie Graff at bgraff@cbisd.org, or 858 900-2519.
