DayTimers Speaker Series: Connecting across the world: One woman’s experience with the Abayudaya Jewish Community of Uganda with Rebecca Ottinger

Thursday, October 13, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

$5

Join us as we hear from our Beth Israel alum Rebecca Ottinger about her time with the Abayudaya Jewish community of Uganda. Rebecca spent three months in Uganda at the end of 2021, traveling and connecting with friends. After discovering the Abayudaya Jewish community, Rebecca spent multiple shabbats with them in the village of Nabugoye, and in January 2022 she participated as an ‘older sister’ in a very large Ugandan Jewish wedding. Through this presentation of photos and videos, you’ll learn about the Abayudaya community and Rebecca’s experience, and hear how you can support the community’s mission to educate their youth.

Rebecca Ottinger grew up at Beth Israel, playing cello and teaching as a Madricha. She is a graduate of Brandeis University (Summa Cum Laude) in Hispanic Studies and Education Studies. She is an educator and world traveler, and she connects with Jewish communities around the world as she travels. Most recently she was the general manager of The Fab Foundation, a nonprofit in Boston. She continues to teach at the Lee and Frank Goldberg Religious School and is thrilled to be sharing her cultural experiences with you.

Fee: $5 per person. DayTimers monthly programs are open to the whole community.
