Martin has been a member of Beth Israel since 2001, when he moved here to become a caregiver for his parents. He was born and raised in Pittsburgh and lived most of his adult life in Columbus, Ohio, earning two Masters Degrees (one in American History and one in Education) while teaching public school for almost 30 years. At one time or another, he taught Social Studies and English for grades 7 thru 12.

In 2011, he became a regular at Friday night services, particularly enamored by the music. In 2012, Martin started attending Torah Study (his favorite activity to this day) and eventually went on to be join the Minyan Service. Also that year, he started his long-term involvement with the Caring Community which continues to this day. In 2013, Martin began attending the Men’s Club Discussion Group. He joined the Men’s Club Board in 2015, and became active in many of their programs, and is now their president. He have also been on the Adult Education Committee, and continues to take some of the classes they offer.
