Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal, and Heirloom Recipes From Occupied France

Monday, October 23, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

In Bitter Sweet, her 11th cookbook, Kitty Morse shares an intensely personal look at a once lost chapter of her ancestor’s lives in Occupied France, relatives who perished in the Holocaust.

Pieced together from hundreds of family papers and photos, some more than a century old, these well-worn documents include her great-grandfather, army doctor Prosper Lévy-Neymarck’s diary in which she chronicles the German advance in Alsace-Lorraine from April to December 1940. Inside the same tattered black leather valise that had belonged to her late mother, Kitty discovered her great-grandmother Blanche’s notebook containing nearly 100 handwritten recipes — more than 70 of which she translated from the French and kitchen tested — classics such as Gratin Dauphinois, Cherry Clafoutis, Croquembouche (French Wedding Cake), and Civet de Lapin (Rabbit in Riesling Wine) as well as Blanche’s unusual Carrot Cake.

Bitter Sweet is more than a remembrance of a painful past, it’s an homage to daily family life during WWII.
