LEE & FRANK Z”L GOLDBERG

Lee and Frank z”l Goldberg joined Beth Israel in 1967. Their children and grandchildren grew up in the congregation, and the family celebrated countless lifecycle events at Beth Israel. The Goldbergs are the embodiment of l’dor v’dor—from generation to generation. Their exceptional philanthropic commitment to Beth Israel was recognized when The Lee and Frank Goldberg Family Religious School was named for them.

Lee and Frank z”l exemplify all that the Carl M. Esenoff Memorial Award represents. Throughout their almost 70 years of marriage, the couple were actively involved in the San Diego community. From the San Diego Opera to Seacrest Village, San Diego State University to Moores Cancer Center and Words Alive (to name just a few from a very long list), their support and leadership have been felt throughout San Diego. The couple’s commitment to making an impact is captured in words they included in their Book of Life Statement: “We have learned that it is not what you gather but what you scatter that matters.”

THE CARL M. ESENOFF MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY COMMUNITY SERVICE

The prestigious Carl M. Esenoff Award was established in 1987 by the Board of Directors of Beth Israel in recognition of the lifelong dedication of Carl M. Esenoff, the first recipient. Despite being recognized as one of San Diego’s outstanding civic, professional and communal leaders, it took three trips to persuade the humble leader to accept the inaugural award. Recipients of this unique honor are outstanding individuals who maintain a meaningful membership in the congregation and have been active in, supportive of, and demonstrated leadership in the synagogue and the larger San Diego community.
