Rachel’s Women’s Center provides overnight, emergency, short/midterm, safe and sober shelter for homeless women.

To sign-up for a volunteer slot, follow this link.

Congregation Beth Israel’s Women of Beth Israel and Social Action Committees invite you to help us feed 28-32 hungry, homeless women on the second Sunday of even-numbered months, at Rachel’s Women’s Center (plus Christmas Day!). We appreciate sign-ups for one or more slots/dates, as explained below. Our plans for the next dates & times, subject to the updates below, are:

  • At the present time–All pickups will be at the lower curb near CBI guard station, and if gate is locked, just park on street in front of gate and we will find you at the curb

Here’s a Coronavirus update for you, our CBI/WBI volunteers, on a change to our Rachel’s Women’s Center visiting policies. Our recent COVID-19 policy has been to collect the donated food for each date at 4:15 pm at the lower CBI curb near the guard station (9001 Towne Centre Drive; if CBI gate is locked, please park on street in front of gate). A coordinator then drops the meal off at the Rachel’s Women’s Center storefront curb, by calling the desk for admission because there is a locked gate there (619/696-0873), but we have not been including a regular serving component.

Now, we can offer a modified serving opportunity.  We learned from the staff at the Center that the clients there are COVID-19 vaccinated, and that a few volunteers would now be welcome to go in & serve the dinner we bring, and do some visiting with the clients from approximately 5:15-6:15 p.m.  An RWC staff person is always there.  If a CBI teen would like to volunteer, she/he would need to have an adult there also, to visit/serve. Right now there is no mask requirement, so masks are voluntary, and visitors don’t have to be vaccinated.  So, in connection with our upcoming drop-off of dinners on 2d Sundays (Dec. 11/Christmas Day/ Feb./Apr./June/ etc.), we have added these alternative signup slots on this SignUpGenius, for each date:

  1.  Volunteer to collect all the food items at CBI and then drive the donated food downtown to the RWC facility at 759 Eighth Ave., San Diego, CA. 92101, and stay to assist with serving and visiting that day, from approximately 5:15-6:15 p.m., OR–
  2. Volunteer to arrive at the RWC site to bring one of the designated food items and also to go in and assist with serving and visiting that day, from approximately 5:15-6:15 p.m.  The coordinator or other volunteer will bring the rest of the dinner.

Please let us know what works for you!  If there are no such volunteers for serving/visiting on a particular date, we will continue our policy of dropping off food at the RWC curb, so their staff there can serve dinner. (Also, for those of you living downtown, it is fine to let us know if you prefer to drop off your food directly there; you can call their front desk phone # at 619/696-0873 and they will come out to retrieve your food and you don’t need to go in.) Thank you for helping!!!!!

The following information should answer [most] questions that you might have with regard to volunteering.

Congregation Beth Israel
Rachel’s Women’s Center Volunteer Information

  • You need not be a CBI member to volunteer.
  • [Except as explained above–Please do not go to Rachel’s Women’s Center dinner site unless you have made an arrangement on the volunteer slots provided; FYI–It is downtown near the main post office at 759 Eighth Ave. 92101 on the block between F & G Streets, and its front desk phone # is  619/696-0873.]
  • The food you supply should be enough for 28-32 hungry women. The food should be already prepared and ready to eat (not cans, etc.). It’s OK to provide packaged ready to eat salads, breads, toppings, desserts, etc., as they can put them into serving dishes there and use their own serving utensilsThere are no cooking facilities at Rachel’s Women’s Center, and we are unable to return your own serving dishes to you, so please use foil, etc.
  • We collect useful donations such as toiletries (unused shampoo, conditioner, cosmetics, toothbrushes), paper goods (plates/cups/silverware/towels/napkins), coffee/tea supplies, cleaning/sanitation items, new socks, as well as single-serving wrapped snacks (granola bars, etc.)…If you have such items, Valerie and/or Judy will be glad to pick them up when meal pickups occur….until we get back to “normal”!
