Seeing Israel: From Photography to AI
Speaker’s Forum & Dinner Sponsored by the Men’s Club

Cost: $20
  • This event has passed.

Explore Israel through the eyes of Beth Israel member Dr. Joe Nalven. A cultural anthropologist and artist, he delves into the idea and reality of seeing Israel. From 1985 to today, Nalven blends photography, digital art, and AI to craft his imagined Israel. Throughout his talk, Nalven asks us, and himself, how we see Israel -- its many places, individuals and events. Join us for a fascinating discussion about Israel through imagery.

Dinner 6:30 - 7:00 pm; Speaker 7:00 - 8:00 pm

Please join us on May 28 for our monthly Speaker’s Forum & Dinner in the Feuerstein Family Activity Center. ALL adult members of the congregation are welcome!

The fee is $20 to attend in person and enjoy the deli buffet dinner; payment may be made online, or at the door by cash or check ONLY. (For planning purposes we assume that everyone attending in person will enjoy the meal and share the cost. If you prefer to “listen only” please join remotely via Zoom.)

Please RSVP below no later than Friday, May 23 so we can plan for enough seating and food for everyone.

Joe Nalven

Joe Nalven is a fine art and ethnographic photographer, a digital artist and now an AI artist. Through these media, he explores the boundaries of image making. He was a founding member of the Digital Art Guild, an author of Going Digital: The Practice and Vision of Digital Artists, and a blogger for the San Diego Union Tribune about San Diego artists. Since 1985, he has visited Israel and imagined it through photography, digital art and generative AI. He co-edited Israel at 60 - Through Our Eyes: Photo Recollections of Israel that brought together photographs of Israel by members of Congregation Beth Israel.

PLEASE BRING Art Supplies to Send to Israel Preschools!

Men’s Club is supporting a new, yearlong project by Beth Israel’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program to collect and send much needed art supplies to pre-schools in Israel. After filling a suitcase with art supplies, ECE will ask a preschool family to deliver it when they travel to Israel or when a family member returns to Israel from a visit here. ECE also welcomes donations of used suitcases for that 1-way trip to Israel.

Men’s Club will collect your donated art supplies at this Speaker's Forum and Dinner at our future events. You can also bring your donations any time to the pre-school office. Please choose art supplies suitable for pre-schoolers and safe to ship (e.g., no liquids or permanent markers), Examples include washable markers, crayons, stickers, safety scissors, colored pencils, glue sticks, colored tape/ribbon and construction paper, modeling clay or Play-doh, pipe cleaners. THANK YOU!
