Speaker’s Forum & Dinner Sponsored by the Men’s Club: Keeping Memories Alive

Wednesday, January 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Cost: $20

Please join us on January 21 for an evening with Sandra Scheller, Founder and President of RUTH – Remember Us the Holocaust. A special RUTH exhibit at the La Jolla library, launched last year, has been extended through June 2026.

Echoing her TED talk, Sandra will emphasize the importance of preserving and sharing personal stories—especially those of Holocaust survivors—to ensure that history’s human lessons are not forgotten. Drawing on her own experience as the daughter of a survivor, she explains how storytelling, education, and the preservation of artifacts transform abstract historical facts into deeply human narratives that foster empathy and understanding. To her, remembering is not a passive act but a responsibility passed from one generation to the next. Sharing firsthand accounts — including her mother’s and grandmother’s experiences — gives a human face to history and helps future generations connect emotionally to the Holocaust.

The Men’s Club monthly Speaker’s Forum & Dinner is held in the Feuerstein Family Activity Center, with dinner from 6:30 to 7:00 pm followed by the presentation and discussion from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.

ALL ADULT MEMBERS of the congregation are welcome! The fee is $20 to attend in person and enjoy the deli buffet dinner. Please pay online, or you can pay at the door by cash or check ONLY – NO credit cards, please!

We ask that all those attending in person share the cost and enjoy the meal. If you prefer to “listen only” please join remotely via Zoom. If you registered to “pay at the door” but are unable to attend please let us know as soon as possible; we buy food based on total RSVPs. Please RSVP below no later than Friday, January 16 so we can plan for enough seating and food for everyone.

Sandra Scheller

Sandra Scheller grew up in San Diego, the daughter of Holocaust survivors Ruth and Kurt Sax. She is the author of the book and documentary Try to Remember – Never Forget. Her TED Talk, “Keeping Memories Alive,” has been widely used in Holocaust education programs in schools. Sandra continues to assist Holocaust education teams nationwide. This is her third Holocaust exhibition in San Diego County since 2020.

Sandra’s artistic background is diverse. In addition to being an author and photographer, she has performed professionally as a mime, dancer, and solo performer, including appearances on Reading Rainbow and Sesame Street. She was also a solo performer at the historic Amargosa Opera House in Death Valley, where she was nominated as Nevada Artist of the Year in 2010. Sandra worked for many years as a costume designer and wardrobe technician, with sewing skills inherited from her mother. Her professional credits include work with The Flying Cranes aerial ballet and trapeze, Cirque du Soleil, and Ringling Bros. Circus. She received her pilot’s license in the early 1990s.

Sandra graduated from San Diego State University and earned her teaching credential from UCLA. She is married and has raised two sons. Through her work, she hopes her message resonates: San Diego County needs a permanent Holocaust museum.
