“Mysteries of Jewish Identity” led by Rabbi Philip Graubart
Tuesday, June 8, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Tuesday, repeating until Tuesday, July 6, 2021
Dates: Tues., June 8, 15, 29, July 6, 2021 @ 10:00am-11:30am
What does it mean to feel Jewish? Is Jewish identity primarily an ethnic, tribal identity? Or a set of religious obligations? Or a collection of ethical ideas? A combination of all three? What makes an organization Jewish? Can non-Jews acquire, or feel a Jewish identity? What role does Israel and Zionism play in forming today’s American Jewish identity?
In this class, we’ll examine the building blocks of Jewish identity using both ancient Jewish sources, and modern Jewish culture, including stories, poems, songs and video clips. We’ll grapple with the above questions, examining ethnicity, spirituality, dual and dueling identities, and the weight of historical memory. We’ll attempt to discover a working definition of Jewish identity, and consider how this identity obligates us in our lives at home, at work, and in the world.
There is no fee, but please RSVP for planning purposes. This event is held virtually on Zoom. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event. For more information, contact Program Director Ilene Tatro at itatro@cbisd.org.
