MLK Shabbat with Yavilah McCoy: African-American Jews and the Civil Rights Movement

Friday Evening MLK Shabbat Service:

Join us as we honor the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. in word and song at a very special Erev Shabbat service. Our guest speaker, Yavilah McCoy will present Allied Journeys to Freedom: African-American Jews and the Civil Rights Movement. All are welcome and no RSVP is needed. SENIORS: Take the Shabbat Shuttle to this service. The $10 fee includes round trip, door-to-door service. Seating is limited so reserve your ride today. Saturday Morning Torah Study and Lay Led Minyan Service:

On Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., join Yavilah McCoy as she leads Torah Study, summarizing the parsha, linking it to an exploration of “African-American Jewish Journeys to Justice” and leading group discussion. At 10:00 a.m. Yavilah will attend our Lay Led Minyan Service and deliver the Drash.

Elements of Jewish Gospel: An African American Jewish Journey

On Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Yavilah McCoy and Alexi Paraschos will join with our Beth Israel youth, teen and adult musicians for a journey through song and personal narrative describing the ways that music can be engaged to expand spiritual connection and widen commitments to justice and activism. Yavilah McCoy is a fourth-generation African-American Jew and is the founder of Ayecha, a nonprofit organization providing educational resources for Jewish Diversity and advocacy for Jews of Color in the United States. She is a teacher, writer, editor, and diversity consultant. She has taught Judaic Studies, Hebrew, and English Literature in elementary and secondary schools. Yavilah is the former New England director of The Curriculum Initiative, (TCI), a non-profit educational consultancy that serviced close to 600 prep schools across the nation. Yavilah currently works within her consultancy, Dimensions Educational Consulting to expand awareness of issues of identity and culture and empower communities to contextualize justice journeys within the framework of leadership, citizenship, and better outcomes.
