Men’s Club Speaker Forum: Social Class and Mental Illness in California – Prof. Neil Gong, UCSD

Wednesday, January 15 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Neil Gong Banner

Please join the Men's Club for our monthly Speaker's Forum including dinner, socializing and a discussion. ALL adult members of the congregation are welcome! A Zoom option is available for those unable to attend in person.

This talk will address how people and families of different means experience mental illness and its treatment. The presentation will take listeners from the streets to family homes, from public clinics to elite private treatment centers, revealing both shared struggles and sometimes surprising differences. In addition to discussion of policy interventions, we will also consider the existential and ethical issues at stake in the unequal treatment of mental illness.

Neil Gong is assistant professor of sociology at UC San Diego and author of the new book, “Sons, Daughters, and Sidewalk Psychotics: Mental Illness and Homelessness in Los Angeles.” In addition to his academic writing, his public commentary has appeared in such venues as the Washington Post, the Atlantic, and the Los Angeles Times.

A deli dinner is available beginning at 6:30 pm. The dinner fee is $20 (payment may be made on line or at the door by cash or check). Please RSVP by January 10, so we can plan for enough seating, food and desserts for everyone.
