Beth Israel’s Men’s Club is pleased to announce that State Senator Marty Block will be our guest speaker at our November Dinner Forum. You will hear Senator Block give a legislative summary following his planned retirement at the end of his current term in 2016.

Senator Block is the California state senator for Senate district 39. He previously represented California’s 78th State Assembly district from 2008 to 2012 and has been president of both the San Diego County Board of Education and the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees. He has frequently served as Judge Pro Tem of the San Diego Superior Court. His community involvement includes time as commissioner of the San Diego County Commission on Children, Youth and Families. He also founded the San Diego Latino/Jewish Coalition and served as president of the American Jewish Committee, San Diego Chapter. Senator Block was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention four separate times in 1988, 1992, 1996, and 2004.

Senator Block earned his BA in political science and education at Indiana University as well as a law degree from DePaul University. He began his career as a history teacher in Illinois before coming to San Diego. He retired after 26 years as a professor, dean and director at San Diego State University where he founded the National Higher Education Law and Policy Institute. He is a five-time recipient of outstanding faculty awards at San Diego State University and was presented with the University Distinguished Service Award upon retirement by SDSU President Stephen Weber.

This program is open to the entire San Diego community, both men and women.  It also doubles as our annual Jewish Family Service “Embrace a Family” program, which provides holiday gifts to families in need. Temple or Men’s Club membership is not a requirement to attend. 

A buffet dinner and the speaker program are free for those who bring new, unused unwrapped toys and/or gifts, grocery scrip or gift certificates (per attendee) valued at $15 or higher. For those who choose not to bring gifts, all funds collected ($15 with an RSVP, $18 without) for the event will be donated to Jewish Family Service.  You may RSVP below.
