Beth Israel’s Men’s Club is pleased to announce that Cantor Emeritus Sheldon Merel will be our guest at our February 22 Dinner Forum. Please join us and hear him share with us “His Life Beyond the Pulpit with Slides, Videos, Sculpting, Music and Anecdotes”.Special thanks to Ken Gimbel for producing and editing this presentation.

Cantor Merel graduated as a Cantor Educator from the School of Sacred Music which was the first school to train Cantors in the United States.   He served congregations in South Bend, Indiana, Chicago, Oakland, CA. and Toronto before coming to San Diego ‘s Beth Israel in 1979.

During his 11 active years at Congregation Beth Israel, Cantor Merel presented an annual Friday evening orchestral Shabbat with David Amos and the Jewish Community Center Orchestra. He also arranged performances of the Temple Choir and a different church choir each year featuring orchestral compositions by Jewish composers.  He has been recognized and honored for his contributions to music far beyond his cantorial music.

Upon his retirement in 1991, Cantor Merel became Cantor Emeritus of Beth Israel. His cantorial contributions to Beth Israel’s High Holy Day services and other events continue well into his retirement. He also remained active as a performer, and appeared as the featured soloist with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London under the direction of David Amos.

He was also honored by the members of Congregation Beth Israel who established a cantorial scholarship fund bearing his name in perpetuity at Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music. It was in honor of receiving an honorary PhD in Jewish Music from the Hebrew Union College.
