Jewish Art from the Tabernacle to Chagall: Evolution of Jewish Imagery Through the Generations
Tuesday, November 6, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Tuesday, repeating until Tuesday, November 20, 2018
Tuesdays, November 6, 13, and 20, 2018 @ 10:00am-11:30am (3 Sessions) in the Feuerstein Family Activity Center
Artist and Educator Jane Lazerow holds an MFA from UCSD and has had her art exhibited throughout San Diego since the early 1980’s. Her unique shared expertise of art and Judaism is the key that unlocks how she will share with us the evolution of Jewish imagery through the ages. She herself paints ancient stories and myths, biblical narratives, and personal dramas with a focus on human interactions.
Sessions will cover:
- Examine art in the Mishkan—Cherubim, curtains, lampstand, Aaron’s breastplate and clothing. We will see how these pieces have been transformed in synagogues through time.
- Manuscript illumination—Duke of Sussex bible, book of Esther, prayer books, haggadot. We will see examples of how the imagery has changed looking at modern haggadot.
- Modern Jewish artists, those who create Jewish religious art and those whose work has no religious content.
