The Texts & Topics Shaping Modern Jewish Life:
Exploring The New Jewish Canon
A series convened by The Shalhevet Institute in partnership with the Shalom Hartman Institute.
January 6, February 4, March 11, April 29
5:00pm – 6:30pm PST / 8:00pm – 9:30pm EST
The New Jewish Canon, a new anthology edited by Yehuda Kurtzer and Claire Sufrin, pulls together a series of texts that shaped a generation. The book pairs each selection with an insightful contemporary essay explaining its continuing significance today. Join The Shalhevet Institute and scholars from the Shalom Hartman Institute as we explore some of the most compelling themes from the book, including power, media, Orthodoxy and diversity.
This form will register you for all four sessions. You may attend any or all of them.
  • Yehuda Kurtzer: Exploring Power and Powerlessness in The New Jewish Canon
  • Mijal Bitton: Identity and “Who Counts?” in The New Jewish Canon
  • David Zvi Kalman: Books, Blogs, and Other Packaging for Jewish ideas in The New Jewish Canon
  • Elana Stein Hain: Modern Orthodoxy and America in The New Jewish Canon
Having read The New Jewish Canon is not required to register or attend these sessions; however, if you wish to purchase a copy containing essays by these scholars and over 60 others, you can find it here.
