Join Yavilah McCoy as she shares a legacy of Jewish music that is unique. Similar to the songs that fueled the Civil Rights movement, Jewish Gospel introduces audiences to African-American-Jewish melodies that were sung across generations, at times of love, at times of protest, in times of faith, and despair, but chiefly as affirmations of faith in the invisible and hope in the face of adversity. This lovely collection of ballads, spirituals, folk songs, and hip-hop testify to an adherence to justice as life’s primary directive, and to an abiding faith that injustice will not persist uncorrected. Yavilah will share songs that have been sung across the generations of her African-American Jewish family and help you to take music back to your communities that will open hearts, call for healing, and give voice to an authentic Jewish desire for freedom, justice, dignity, and human equality.

Singing will be followed by a discussion of what it means to embrace inter-sectional identities across race, faith and gender in the contemporary social justice landscape.
