DayTimers Speaker Series: Carla Berg

Thursday, March 18, 2021 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

In this program featuring a range of jazz standards to Ladino classics, Carla Berg will be sharing and exploring moments of her life through songs and examining how her ethnic background influences who she is and how she expresses herself through songwriting. In particular, she will examine growing up as a Jew in Brazil (however being a child of immigrants ), and her adjustment to becoming American. This program will feature accompanist Richard E Miller.

When performing, she loves when the audience doesn’t just hear the music but is so moved that they get out of their chairs and start dancing or singing along. It is important for her to know that she has touched someone through her music, and is able to see their emotions. She doesn’t just want to perform for people — she wants to enjoy music with them! This goal has been a challenge with the pandemic. However, after participating in many virtual performances with internationally renowned musicians, she is able to feel the energy through the screen and can see her music’s impact on the audience.

Carla Berg is a singer/songwriter. Although she is a native Brazilian who celebrates the music and culture of Brazil through song, her work also seeks to reflect the multi-faceted nature of Carla herself and the cultures from which she hails. Raised Jewish, Carla’s earliest musical memories come from singing at Passover services with her grandfather, a cantor (singer). The duality of her cultural background has alongside influences such as jazz, bossa nova, samba, world music and classical opera to define a sound that makes Carla’s voice unique.

About Carla, in her own words: My name is Carla Sitton Berg, known as Shoshana (rose) in Hebrew. I am a married mother of two school-aged girls with a background in early childhood education. Within the area of ethnomusicologists, I showcase my beloved Mizrahi, Jewish, and Brazilian roots when I perform as a singer and write songs. My Ladino background and multicultural influences enable me to sing in different styles and languages such as Portuguese, Hebrew, English, and Ladino, among others. During my performances, it is my intention to entertain and engage the audience through songs that tell a story of how my diverse roots and ancestry impact my identity and my life.
