DayTimers Speaker Series: Dr. Paul Michelson, The Eye of the Artist or The Eye of The Beholder?

Thursday, December 19, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

$5 – $8

“The “Eye of the Artist” discusses how eye diseases affected famous artists and their works, the discoveries by impressionists of visual effects only recently understood by visual physiologists and other visual phenomena that demonstrate what we see and what is “ real” may be quite different (i.e. demonstrating and explaining “optical illusion” and “normal” vision).

Paul E. Michelson, M. D., is a Board Certified ophthalmologist, Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Michelson received his B.A. degree from the Johns Hopkins University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He received his M.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. After an internship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in internal medicine, he completed his residency at the renowned Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Michelson has served in the US Army Medical Corps as Assistant Chief of Service at Gorgas Hospital in the Canal Zone, on the faculty of Harvard Medical School in Boston, as the Head of Ophthalmology at Scripps Clinic Medical Group and Chief of the Ophthalmology Section of Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California. Author of the book Insight into Eyesight, he has published research articles and chapters in medical texts, primarily in his areas of clinical and research interests: small incision cataract surgery, the treatment of macular degeneration, dry eye disorders including Sjogren’s Syndrome, and ocular complications of systemic disease. Retired from his regular clinical practice, Dr. Michelson continues to consult on complex medical and surgical eye problems, to teach and to participate in volunteer eye care projects and clinics nationally and internationally. He has served as Chair of the Better Vision Institute, the professional advisory board to the Vision Council, Vice Chair of the Foundation for Eye Health Awareness, and Director of the Ophthalmology Service of the UCSD Student Run Free Clinics in San Diego.
