Insomnia and Other Sleep Disturbances

Sonia Ancoli-Israel, Ph.D.

Sleep disturbances are very common in older adults. They are not, however, a result of aging per se, but rather are almost always related to medical/psychiatric problems, medications, or primary sleep disorders, such as insomnia, circadian rhythm disturbances, sleep disordered breathing, REM behavior sleep disorder, restless legs syndrome, and periodic limb movements in sleep.  The good news is that there are effective treatments available for these sleep problems. Join us for Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel’s eye-opening discussion of sleep disturbances and treatments for them.

Sonia Ancoli-Israel, Ph.D., is a Professor Emeritus and Professor of Research in the Departments of Psychiatry and Medicine at the UCSD School of Medicine, and Director of the Gillin Sleep and Chronomedicine Research Center. Her expertise is in the field of sleep disorders and sleep research in aging. Her current interests include the longitudinal effect of sleep disorders on aging, the effect of circadian rhythms on sleep, therapeutic interventions for sleep problems in dementia, and fatigue, particularly the relationship between sleep, fatigue and circadian rhythms in cancer and other chronic illnesses.

DayTimers monthly programs are open to the whole community. Please RSVP below at least one week in advance or to Program Director Ilene Tatro at itatro@cbisd.org, 858 900-2516. Fee: $5 with RSVP, $8 without RSVP.
