Special Shabbat: Celebrating Ava Kurnow’s Retirement

Friday, March 23, 2018 @ 6:15 pm - 8:15 pm

Ava Kurnow has been a leading Reform Jewish educator for decades. Beginning at Temple Chai in Phoenix, this long and distinguished career will conclude with her retirement from Beth Israel at the end of this school year. We have been honored and we have benefited enormously from Ava’s decision to bring her experience, her wisdom, and her love of children, Judaism and learning, to our congregation. It is therefore with joy tinged with a touch of sadness that we will honor Ava, not only for her years as our Director of Religious Education, but for her service to the Jewish people all her life.

Please join us as we will honor Ava at our Shabbat service on Friday night, March 23rd. The guest speaker that night will be the rabbi that helped launch Ava’s career, Rabbi William Berk. He was one of the most innovative congregational rabbis in America before his aliyah to Israel about ten years ago, nationally acclaimed for his innovations in education and for developing the model of the synagogue as a caring community. He’s known also as an excellent speaker, and he is Rabbi Michael Berk’s brother.

Shabbat Service will be followed by an oneg.
