A Rabbi in the Vatican Online Tour: Jewish Influences on the Sistine Chapel

Sunday, May 9 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The  Vatican in Rome is the center of Catholicism and the Sistine Chapel is its crowning glory. The chapel’s world famous ceiling was painted by the great Michelangelo Buonarroti five centuries ago. Less well known is that the chapel was modeled on the holy heart of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem built by King Solomon, that its biblical frescoes reflect Jewish influences on Michelangelo’s education, and that the ornate flooring has kabbalistic overtones. This virtual tour is a unique opportunity to be guided through the stunning chapel by Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum, dean of LSJS. Weaving together Torah and Talmud, Midrash and Mysticism, Rabbi Zarum will share fascinating hidden messages left by the great Renaissance painters. These messages still have meaning for us today in the rift between religion and reason, and between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Rabbi Zarum has decades of experience as a museum guide. His research, style and enthusiasm are sure to make this an unforgettable experience.
Rabbi Dr. Raphael Zarum is Dean of the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS). He has a doctorate in Theoretical Physics, a Masters’ in Education, and is a graduate of the Mandel Leadership School in Jerusalem. Raphael is a sought-after lecturer with wildly innovative and meaningful readings of Torah, Midrash, Talmud and the Jewish festivals that reference modern literature, cinema and culture.
