About the Men's Club
The Men's Club offers adult men of all ages a Jewish setting in which to learn and socialize while supporting our congregation.
How to Join the Men's Club New CBI membership includes one year free Men's Club membership for adult men. Afterward CBI members determine their own dues level, either either $36, $54, $72, or $100. These dues make possible our programming and support services to CBI. Please make your checks payable to "Beth Israel Men's Club" and mail to:

Wednesday, June 19, 2013, 06:30pm On Yom Kippur, half of the sins Jews confess to have to do with words that came out of our mouth. Rabbi Berk will discuss aspects of Judaism’s well developed ethics of speech.
Rabbi Michael Berk joined Congregation Beth Israel as Senior Rabbi in July 2007. He brings a wealth of rabbinic experience to the congregation. From 1997 to 2007, Rabbi Berk served as Regional Director, Pacific Central West Council, for the Union for Reform Judaism. From 1991 to 1997 he served as rabbi at Temple Beth Torah in Ventura. From 1984 to 1991 he was the rabbi at Beth Sholom Temple in Santa Monica. In his first position after ordination, he served as rabbi educator, assistant rabbi, and associate rabbi at Temple Emanu El, San Jose, from 1980 to 1984.
Rabbi Berk was ordained in 1980 at Hebrew Union College and Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned a Master's Degree in Hebrew Letters from Hebrew Union College in 1978. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1975.
Rabbi Berk is married to Rabbi Aliza Berk (pronounced Aleeza). The Berks were ordained as rabbis on the same day in June 1980. Rabbi Aliza earned her BA from University of California, Santa Cruz, and, after she became a rabbi, she earned a Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling from University of Santa Clara. She is now a licensed family therapist and a trained spiritual director. In San Francisco, Rabbi Aliza was the rabbi at the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center.

Friday, June 21, 2013, 06:15pm Join us for this Erev Shabbat service recognizing the Men’s Club for its activities in support of the Congregation. Following services, all are invited to attend the Shabbat dinner with Rabbi Berk. New Men’s Club officers will be announced and awards for service to the Men’s Club will be presented. Dinner will be catered by Girard Gourmet, a local business that has been featured in The New York Times and Zagat Guide. Plus, they are listed in numerous travel books and were voted Best deli, best bakery, best catering, best takeout and best sandwiches in La Jolla by the La Jolla Light newspaper.
Dinner fee: $30 per adult, $20 per child 12 and under. Your RSVP for dinner is needed no later than Tuesday, June 18. Payment for the dinner is requested prior to the beginning of Shabbat if possible. Special arrangements can be made if necessary.

Wednesday, July 17, 2013, 06:30pm Please join us at our July Dinner Forum to hear Caron Golden share information about her exciting career as a San Diego-based freelance writer, editor, culinary blogger, and radio host.
Ms. Golden’s articles have appeared in a variety of traditional media, such as Sunset, Saveur, the Los Angeles Times, San Diego Magazine, San Diego Home, Garden/Lifestyles, and the San Diego Union-Tribune, as well as website's like sandiegomagazine.com (where she is a food columnist) and culinate.com. Her popular blog, San Diego Foodstuff, has a coveted Google ranking of five, exceptional for the website of an individual.
She has been a freelance writer and editor based in San Diego since 1991. She has also written for a variety of publications, including the Los Angeles Times, San Diego Union-Tribune, Copley News Service, Government Computer News, Defense Systems Magazine, and Westways.
Caron is a member of IACP and Les Dames d'Escoffier International (LDEI), an organization of women leaders in food, beverage, and hospitality whose mission is education, advocacy, and philanthropy. Membership is by invitation. She is also a volunteer chef/instructor at the wonderful Olivewood Gardens in National City, where she teaches kids easy-to-make delicious and nutritious meals.

Monday, September 16, 2013, 08:15am Volunteers from the Men’s Club will perform the mitzvah of building the Sukkah. Religious School students will decorate the finished product. Men's Club Ongoing Events
Men's Club Ushers The pleasant, friendly ushers who pass out your prayer books and literature at Friday Shabat Services are coordinated by the Men's Club and WBI. To volunteer to usher, please contact Don Greenberg.
Men's Discussion Group Every 2nd and 4th Monday at 10:00 a.m. Feuerstein Family Activity Center The purpose of the Men's Discussion Group is to create a forum for men who are members of Congregation Beth Israel to meet together, enjoy camaraderie and to discuss relevant issues. Participation is not limited to Men's Club members and a reservation is not required. Just show up. Discussion topics depend on what participants wish to discuss, and can include: current events, politics, local, state, and federal issues, financial matters, religion, health and social Issues, or any topic of mutual interest. From time to time, outside "subject" experts could be asked to participate, to lend their expertise. For more information contact Larry Bornstein. Refreshments will be served.

Men's Club Provides Gifts to Bar/Bat Mitzvah The Men's Club proudly continues its long tradition of presenting Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrants with a meaningful religious remembrance in the form of a book to commemorate their entry into the Jewish community.
Monthly Board Meeting: First Wednesday of the Month We are inviting interested CBI members to join our Board. We meet for lively discussions of Men's Club and CBI activities on the 1st Wednesday evening of each month at 6:30 p.m. We follow with dinner at a nearby restaurant. Qualifications to be involved are simply your willingness to help and guide the organization through your ideas and participation. Enjoyment and fellowship are guaranteed.
