Project SARAH: Joshua Safran: One Man’s Journey from Survivor to Advocate

Wednesday, October 22, 2014 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm

Every October, the San Diego community recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an opportunity for organizations around the country to work together to raise awareness and promote preventative solutions to relationship abuse. During this month, Project SARAH is proud to host an event to provide community education and outreach around this important issue.

FREE SPIRIT is “a beautiful, powerful memoir.”Three years ago, Jewish Family Service introduced attorney Joshua Safran to San Diego in a presentation of the award-winning documentary CRIME AFTER CRIME, which chronicled his seven‐year struggle to free a brutally abused woman from prison. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival and on the Oprah Winfrey Network, this riveting courtroom story profiled the strength Safran drew from his faith as an observant Jew. What wasn’t told in the film was just as dramatic and heartbreaking: Safran’s own story, which, in no small measure, explains why he took on this case in the first place.

This October, JFS will bring Joshua back; this time to share his personal story about his mother’s harrowing experience with domestic abuse. In FREE SPIRIT: Growing Up On the Road and Off the Grid, Safran has written a powerful and eloquent memoir recounting hitchhiking across the American West with his wiccan revolutionary mother and standing up to his violent, alcoholic stepfather. His story reveals how he overcame adversity, reconnected to his Jewish heritage, became a lawyer, and went from survivor to advocate.
