College Commons: Politics and the Pulpit with Rabbi Stephanie Kolin

Tuesday, September 9, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

This real-time conversation and Q&A with Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion scholars and community leaders will be live-streamed to Beth Israel.

In the Reform world, social action is often inextricably linked to political action.  And when politics appear on the pulpit, controversy sometimes surfaces.  Either the topic is difficult or the very notion of politics on the pulpit is itself divisive.  Rabbi Stephanie Kolin discusses with Dr. Joshua Holo, dean of the L.A. campus of HUC-JIR, why the stakes are so high, and how difficult it is to put your finger on the nature of the problem when we don’t even agree on what constitutes “politics.”

Rabbi Stephanie Kolin is the Co-Director of Just Congregations, the Union for Reform Judaism’s community organizing program.  As a rabbi at Temple Israel, Boston, she guided the social justice community and was rabbinic liaison to the youth program. In this capacity, she and her team organized on issues such as access to higher education, usury, equal marriage, anti-bullying legislation, transgender legislation, healthcare, and other issues of shared concern.

No fee.  Please RSVP at least one week in advance below.
