The High Holy Days are a time that we confront the ultimate issues of our lives. We draw strength for that from a number of places. But one source is our family – our loved ones who have cared for us and influenced us. So, one of the customs associated with this time is to visit the graves of family members between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. At their graves, we reflect on all they meant to us and we draw strength to live up to all they knew we could be. We also honor their memory by reciting Kaddish. Like many communities, we gather for a brief memorial service on the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
