Food for Thought: Learning Opportunities

We have several learning opportunities scheduled throughout the day of Yom Kippur, Saturday, October 4. Room locations will be posted in the Price Family Courtyard.

9:00 – 9:45 a.m.

Ava Kurnow: Reimagining and Revitalizing Prayer
Ava Kurnow is the Director of the Lee & Frank Goldberg Religious School at Beth Israel.

10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Liz Levine: For the Sins We Have Committed. A look at Jewish concepts of sin, forgiveness (of ourselves and others), and atonement
Liz Levine has been actively involved with adult education at Beth Israel for many years. She has a Master’s in Jewish Studies from HUC-JIR in Cincinnati.

Sandy Feldman: Do you have to believe in God to be Jewish?
Dr. Sanford Feldman is a practicing cataract and LASIK surgeon, a former neuroscience researcher, and an engaging speaker. He has taught several popular adult classes at Beth Israel including “The Neuroanatomy of God,” and “What They Didn’t Teach You in Hebrew School.”  His seminar “Do You Have to Believe in God to Be Jewish” was inspired by his own history of struggle with belief and by his ongoing development of a personal theology he finds relevant to the modern world.

Dr. Al Ray: Jewish Views on Health, Illness and Medicine
Dr. Al Ray is a Family Physician at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. He has taught many classes on Judaic Studies including Prayer Book Hebrew, Talmud and Mysticism.

Audrey Jacobs: Forgiving Yourself: Embracing Fear with Confidence
How many of us here need to forgive ourselves? Our rabbis and therapists tell us that before we can genuinely forgive anyone else we must forgive ourselves.
When Audrey Jacobs was 17 she wrote a personal mission statement: To be a catalyst for positive change by educating and inspiring individuals and communities.  She has strove to fulfill her mission by being a Jewish communal leader, an advocate for Jewish education, and a spokesperson for supporting and investing in Israel. Audrey now speaks throughout the US on various topics to inspire Jewish communities, entrepreneurs and women to embrace their power and achieve their dreams.

Sarah Fields: Teshuvah and Shalom Bayit: Questions We Will Discuss:
1. What does tshuvah mean to you?
2. Why is tshuvah an annual process?
3. Is the idea of the right path (derech eretz) limiting or constricting? Can that be helpful in the tshuvah process or too much of an obstacle?
Sarah Fields is an urban planner and Jewish educator and activist. She works in local affordable housing and community development.

12:30 – 1:15 p.m.

Elliott Nahmias: Tekiah: Heeding the Wake-Up Call for Israel
As AIPAC’s San Diego and Desert Communities Area Director, Elliott Nahmias works with the community to organize the political and grassroots efforts of pro-Israel activists. His portfolio includes grassroots mobilization, development, community education, political engagement and donor relations in seven Congressional Districts.
